Take inventory of children's interests and learning styles and build "curriculum" around that. Let them use real books; not text books, and also visual media. Give them opportunity to share with other children what they learned.
Have them keep track of their projects in a personal binder in which they also record the resources they have used. They could even write reviews on the books they found especially interesting, or useful. Simply put, kids should have much more say in their own learning, so they stay engaged and excited about school.
